DALF C1 Exam: Format, Scoring and How to Prepare

DALF C1 Exam: Format, Scoring and How to Prepare

Last updated on October 27th, 2026 at 09:37 am

The DALF C1 is one of the most sought-after French diplomas. It proves that you can use French with ease in academic and professional settings: following a complex talk, writing a structured argument and defending your point of view in a discussion.

Here is how the exam works, how it is scored, who needs it and how to prepare without wasting time.

Key takeaways

  • The DALF C1 is an official diploma from the French Ministry of Education, valid for life.
  • It has four papers, each marked out of 25: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • You need 50/100 to pass, with at least 5/25 in each paper.
  • It is often required by French universities, grandes écoles and employers.

What is the DALF C1?

The DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) is awarded by the French Ministry of Education and administered by France Éducation international. It certifies advanced French at levels C1 and C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Like the DELF, it never expires. You can register directly for the C1 without having passed the lower levels.

The four papers of the DALF C1

Paper What you do Duration Points
Listening (compréhension de l’oral) answer questions on one long recording (about 8 minutes) and several short radio extracts about 40 min /25
Reading (compréhension des écrits) answer questions on a long text of ideas, literary or journalistic 50 min /25
Writing (production écrite) write a synthesis of several documents, then an argumentative essay on the same theme 2 h 30 /25
Speaking (production orale) present a reasoned point of view based on a set of documents, then discuss it with the jury 1 h preparation + 30 min /25

The three written papers take place on the same day and last about four hours in total. The speaking test is held on the same day or a day nearby, depending on the exam centre. Since 2020, candidates no longer choose a specialist field (humanities or sciences): everyone sits the same papers.

How is the DALF C1 scored?

The exam is marked out of 100. To pass, you need at least 50 points overall and at least 5 out of 25 in each paper. A very low score in one skill can therefore cost you the diploma, even with a good total. That is why your preparation should cover all four skills, not just your favourite ones.

Who needs the DALF C1?

  • Students applying to French universities and grandes écoles, which often ask for a C1 level.
  • Professionals who need to prove their level for a job in a French-speaking company or an international organisation.
  • Teachers and translators for whom a certified advanced level is a requirement.
  • Anyone who wants official recognition for years of learning.

Good to know: the synthesis task surprises many candidates. You must summarise several documents objectively, in your own words, without giving your opinion or adding outside information. It is a very French exercise and is worth practising on its own.

How to prepare for the DALF C1

  • Work with real sample papers. France Éducation international publishes sample papers: use them to get used to the timing.
  • Master the synthesis and the essay. Learn the method: identify the key ideas, group them, rephrase them, then build a structured argument.
  • Read and listen to quality media every day. Opinion pieces, radio debates and long reports are close to the exam documents.
  • Practise speaking under exam conditions. Prepare a presentation in one hour, then defend it for thirty minutes in front of a demanding listener.
  • Get feedback on your writing. A teacher who knows the assessment criteria can show you exactly where you lose points.
