Sometimes, for some French exams in particular, students are asked to describe a picture, a cartoon, an ad… Here is our advice to do it as clearly as possible!
Describe in French what kind of picture it is
When you get to describe a picture, the first thing to do is to specify where it comes from:
– Il s’agit d’une photo (photograph) / d’une image (picture) / d’une affiche publicitaire (ad) / d’un dessin – d’une gravure (drawing) / d’une bande dessinée (cartoon) / d’un tableau (painting)
– If we’re talking about a photograph, you can add some more details:
c’est un portrait / une photo de groupe / un paysage / une nature morte.
la photo est claire / foncée / nette / floue…
– If you need to describe a painting, you should talk about the style:
abstrait / expressionniste …..

– La scène se passe à / en..
Expressions to describe the picture in French
You should first describe it as a global scene and then get into the details.
Au premier plan… / Au second plan… / A l’arrière-plan… / Au centre… / Au fond… il y a…/on voit…/se trouve…
If there are characters:
Il est debout / assis / de dos / grand / petit / jeune / vieux….
Il porte un costume / un tee-shirt ….
You should also pay attention to the feelings that you get from looking at the picture:
En regardant l’image, je remarque que… / Je suis touché(e) parce que… / Ce que je trouve beau / bizarre… c’est que… / A mon avis la photo / l’image veut montrer… / exprimer… /se moquer de…
To summarize
When it’s time to write everything down, you need to find the right structure. What question is raised by the picture? How can you address this?
You need to find a logical order to present your ideas. In the introduction, talk about objective elements of the picture (where it’s from, what it looks like, etc.), talk about the issue raised and introduce the outline.
Describe a picture in French: an example

Il s’agit une photo prise un jour d’été dans un parc. Au premier plan, nous voyons une scène de famille où 3 enfants jouent à faire une bataille d’eau avec leur père. Les enfants portent un maillot de bain, le père est habillé et porte des lunettes de soleil. C’est probablement les vacances, il faut chaud et ils veulent s’amuser. Ils sourient tous. Le père est la cible des enfants qui lancent des seaux d’eau sur lui.
A l’arrière-plan, d’autres personnes en maillot de bain se trouvent dans le parc.
