What is a French Impersonal Verb?

French Impersonal verbs are specific verbs that are only conjugated with IL.
IL is called a sujet apparent (apparent subject) because it doesn’t mean anything, neither an object nor a person. You can’t replace IL by anything.

Different kinds of French Impersonal Verbs

1. There are some verbs that are always impersonal verbs, especially those talking about the weather.
For example : Il pleut, il neige, …

2. There are other verbs that are usually standard verbs that you can use in an impersonal sentence structure.
For example : arriver, advenir, convenir, falloir, résulter, rester, sembler,…
Il faut faire l’exercice.
Il convient d’attendre le directeur.
Il arrive que cette porte grince.

3. Sometimes, by using the pronoun “ce”, “cela”, “ça” you need to build an impersonal sentence structure.
For example : Ça devient urgent !
Ce n’est pas facile !

4. Impersonal expressions using the verb «être»:
Il est + [adjectif] + de + [infinitif]
For example : Il est important d’arriver à l’heure
Il est amusant de lire une BD.
Il est difficile de comprendre ce texte.

Il est + l’heure
For example : Il est deux heures.
Il est midi.

5. Finally, the following expressions are very common in French:
– Il y a,
– Il s’agit de,
– il est question de…
For example : Il y a un exercice à faire
Il s’agit de mon problème.
Il est question de la réunion de travail organisée cette semaine.
