A life like a novel

Édith Giovanna Gassion was born in Paris on 19 December 1915. She grew up in poverty, with a street-singer mother and a circus-performer father, and sang on the streets of Paris from a young age. In 1935, Louis Leplée, who ran a cabaret near the Champs-Élysées, spotted her and named her « la Môme Piaf »: « môme » means kid, and « piaf » means sparrow.

Success came fast. During and after the war she became a huge star, first in France, then in the United States. Her private life was marked by great love stories and great tragedies, such as the death of the boxer Marcel Cerdan in a plane crash in 1949. Worn down by illness, she died on 10 October 1963, aged 47. Tens of thousands of people followed her funeral procession to Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

Her most famous songs
