DALF C2 Exam: Format, Scoring and How to Prepare

DALF C2 Exam: Format, Scoring and How to Prepare

Last updated on October 27th, 2026 at 09:36 am

The DALF C2 is the highest French diploma available to learners. It certifies a level of mastery close to that of an educated native speaker: understanding virtually everything you hear or read, and expressing yourself spontaneously, precisely and with nuance.

Here is how the exam is structured, how it is scored and how to prepare for it.

Key takeaways

  • The DALF C2 is the highest level of the DELF-DALF system and is valid for life.
  • It has only two papers, each marked out of 50: one oral and one written.
  • You need 50/100 to pass, with at least 10/50 in each paper.
  • Each paper combines comprehension and production: you understand documents, then use them.

What is the DALF C2?

The DALF C2 is an official diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education and administered by France Éducation international. It corresponds to level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), known as “mastery”. Unlike the C1, which tests the four skills separately, the C2 tests them together in two integrated papers.

The two papers of the DALF C2

Paper What you do Duration Points
Oral comprehension and production listen to a recording, summarise it, develop a point of view on the issue it raises, then debate with the jury 1 h preparation + 30 min /50
Written comprehension and production read a file of documents, then write a structured text (article, editorial, report, speech…) 3 h 30 /50

Since 2020, candidates no longer choose a specialist field: everyone sits the same papers. The topics are general but demanding, drawn from society, culture, science or the economy.

How is the DALF C2 scored?

The exam is marked out of 100. To pass, you need at least 50 points overall and at least 10 out of 50 in each paper. The jury assesses not only accuracy but also the precision of your vocabulary, the range of your structures, the logic of your argument and your ability to adapt to the type of text requested.

Who is the DALF C2 for?

  • Professionals who work at the highest level in French: translators, interpreters, diplomats, lawyers, journalists.
  • Teachers of French who want to certify their own mastery of the language.
  • Advanced learners who live and work in French and want official recognition of a near-native level.

Good to know: the C2 is not simply a harder C1. It tests your ability to process information and turn it into a complete, well-structured text or talk. Candidates with an excellent level sometimes fail because they ignore the type of text requested or run out of time.

How to prepare for the DALF C2

  • Read demanding texts every day. Opinion pieces, essays and long reports build the range of vocabulary and structures the jury expects.
  • Practise summarising. Listen to a radio programme, then summarise it out loud in two minutes, without notes.
  • Write against the clock. Train with a file of documents and a 3 h 30 limit, and learn to plan before you write.
  • Train for debate. Defend a position, then answer objections calmly and precisely.
  • Get expert feedback. At this level, progress comes from precise corrections on style, register and nuance.
